Problem: How to have a HA solution for Siebel Gateway

Symtoms:

We are planning to have HA solution for Siebel GW. the thing is that we dont have the cluster and here is what we are planning to do:

We have 2 Boxes and we are installing Gateway on both and having a switch set to Active/Passive mode for both, meaning one server would be my primary Gateway Server. i will configure the Siebel App Servers using the virtual ip of the switch.

if the my primary Gateway goes down, we will make the Gateway 2 as primary and manually synchronize the enterprise to update the siebelns.dat file and restart the Siebel servers. i assume doing so will give me a high availability solution.

Solution:

The only supported HA solution for the Gateway is using third party cluster software due to the nature of the service and customer is to engage the cluster software vendor for assistance on the setup.

Based on information provided in description, there is no cluster software used and you are trying to achieve HA for gateway with manual switch over using virtual ip of the switch and manual synchronize the enterprise to update the siebelns.dat file and restart the Siebel servers . This is unsupported from Oracle/Siebel Support perspective and thus we are not able to comment or confirm if this will achieve high availability for gateway. And do note in such implementation, it is important to ensure the gateway host / IP configured (in siebns.dat, Siebel server service entry, *.cfg etc) is pointing to the virtual IP and there might me annual steps and tuning required to correctly configure the servers.

On Windows platform specifically, we have seen a lot of customer using the unsupported method like building a Ghost image (or other machine replication image) of the Gateway and regularly backing up the siebns.dat file or virtualized the Gateway servers using some third party virtual machine software etc and make regular image back-ups of the virtual server. All these are unsupported but may work.

So in summary, for any HA implementing without using cluster software, customers are to test this thoroughly to ensure it is working as expected as the only supported HA solution is to use third party cluster software that is viable and reliable.
